– We Can Breathe –

April 22, 2022 @ 4:00 pm 5:00 pm

The past few years have challenged all of us in complex and often unimaginable ways. In the midst of sickness, injustice, fear, death, grief and hope, we have been collectively forced to ask ourselves who we are as individuals and as members of an interconnected global community. While many lessons have been learned, many more are still to come. As we process all that has occurred and prepare for what’s next, the Program in Media Arts and Sciences invites you to an immersive healing experience … We Can Breathe …

There is no revolution without art. Join MAS in a belated Black History Month celebration led by visionary performer, social justice activist and yoga instructor Tanya Birl-Torres and her guests. Describing the experience, Tanya says: “As visionary artists and educators, we live at the intersection of the arts, social justice and systemic change. We recognize the historical and present need to speak truth to Power, while also recognizing that it is our moment to heal, rest, take stock of who we are, where we have been and the future we wish to create. We ask: How heavy is your burden? What is yours to hold and what is yours to heal? How do we use art, sound and vibration to center and heal the Black body?
How do we heal in community?”

Through We Can Breathe, Birl-Torres and company will help us explore these questions through guided meditation – witnessing and practicing the power of stillness, movement, breath, healing, art, conversation and community.

Reception to follow. Please rsvp for the event.
Attendees are encouraged to move as much or as little as they choose.
First 30 students to attend will receive free yoga or meditation mats.
