Resources

Your fellow students: You can get to know them through the “Who We Are” slide deck in the class Google Drive. You can communicate using [our class forum] or you can e-mail the whole class (including staff, UTFs, and alumni mentors) at [whole class e-mail address], or email just 12.000 students, UTFs and the TA at [student group e-mail address].

UTFs: Upper-class students who have been through the Terrascope experience. They are available for consultation about just about anything, including group work, finding resources, project management, and presentations. They are also happy to offer input and advice about other parts of the undergraduate experience. UTFs have their own slides in the “Who We Are” slide deck, and their pictures and individual e-mails are available at [class site]. Email: [student group e-mail address]

Alumni Mentors: MIT alumni who have volunteered to offer feedback, advice and questions throughout the term. Most of those who graduated 2004 or later are Terrascope alumni as well. Some will attend class (virtually or in person) from time to time, while others are available by e-mail and/or phone. At two points in the term you will be asked to consult with a mentor, but they are always available for consultation. You can get to know them in the separate “Who We Are (Alumni Mentor edition)” slide deck in the class Google Drive, and their pictures and biographies are available at [class site]. Library staff: Libraries staff can connect you to resources, datasets, mapping tools (GIS), and bibliographic tools that can be very helpful in your work. For questions about research and bibliographic resources, reach out to the energy and environment librarian at MIT, at [e-mail address]. Resources around MIT

There are lots of resources around MIT to help with different issues you may run into. Here are a few important ones. You can also find all this info, with links, on our webpage, under ‘Resources around MIT’.

  • If you experience personal issues, illness, or stress, it is very helpful to talk with S3 – student support services. They are thoughtful, helpful, and practical. https://studentlife.mit.edu/s3/about-us
  • If you experience accessibility issues or if you may need accommodations, talk with DAS. Try to do this right at the start of the term. Space is tight on campus, and we need two weeks notice to set up testing accommodations. https://studentlife.mit.edu/das

Here are some resources for studying for this class:

  • Office hours! We would be happy to talk with you. You can find the office hours schedule on our webpage.
  • The Math Learning Center has tutors available to discuss this class Monday-Thursday afternoon and evening. You can come by yourself or with a group, and you can ask questions and study in a welcoming space. https://math.mit.edu/learningcenter
  • TSR2 (Talented Scholar Resource Room) offers problem set nights, facilitated study groups, and one-on-one appointments.

During pset nights, you can drop in and ask questions and study in a welcoming space. You can sign up for a facilitated study group for this class. It will be a group of 3-6 students and a mentor that meet every week to study for the class together.
