Food Security Action Team (FSAT)
Spring/Summer 2023 Digest

This digest connects you to up-to-date food security resources for undergraduate and graduate students, spouses, and families. We encourage you all to share these resources broadly to help foster a food secure campus where no student goes to bed hungry!

We have incorporated feedback from the UA, GSC, and DormCon and updated the DoingWell Food and Financial Resources page to organize resources based on the most common factors that impact food insecurity: finances, time, and knowledge. New communication materials have also been developed to direct students to this updated resource.

News and Updates
  • As of May 18, 2023, 222 students have donated 1328 meal swipes using the SwipeShare program this semester, and 514 students have donated 3700 meal swipes this year so far.
  • This semester, Division of Student Life (DSL) provided over 750 eligible on-campus undergraduate students 15 meal swipes as part of the Proactive Meal Swipe program. As part of the IAP Dining Dollars Program, approximately 1,400 undergraduate students received $125 in TechCash each week to supplement food costs.
  • With the closure of the Stratton Student Center (W20) for renovations, DSL is offering on-campus students free grocery delivery from Daily Table. The delivery costs will be covered by DSL until the end of the Spring 2023 semester on Friday, May 26, 2023, for grocery orders totaling $25.00 or more within 2.5 miles of the Daily Table Central Square location. On-campus residents should check the email sent to them on April 18, 2023, for information and details about the new free Daily Table grocery delivery option available. For questions about this delivery option, please email foodstuff@mit.edu.
  • In December, Sloan established the Student Life Office fund. The fund is a resource for students to be able to participate fully in social parts of the Sloan experience and be more food secure. It offers $500 in Tech Cash as well as meal vouchers to Sloan students who request food assistance.
  • The Office of Graduate Education (OGE), in partnership with FSAT, hosted the Spring Grad Food Resource Fair on April 10, 2023. The Ombuds Office, Dining Services, GradSupport, the GSC and other offices shared information, resources, and free food items with students who attended the event.

Coming Up

  • Once again, the FSAT communications group will be partnering with the Health Promotion Working Group (HPWG) to provide on-campus students a resource guide which will include free activities in Boston, food resources, and support services available over the summer. The summer resource guide will launch in early June on the DoingWell website.
  • Looking for an opportunity to get involved? Anyone interested in exploring options for working with local farmers to bring affordable produce bags to campus should contact Susy Jones in the Office of Sustainability to collaborate.
  • DormCon Dining Chairs are working on a map of culturally relevant grocery stores in the MIT area, so students can more easily find the food that they want! If you know of any local stores which sell produce, snacks, spices, or other food from a specific cuisine, please submit it using this Google form.

Key Resources to Share

SwipeShare

The SwipeShare program allows anyone with a meal plan to donate meals to help students in need. If you have the ‘Any 19’ meal plan, you can donate up to 6 ‘Guest Meals’ per semester or, if you have a Block meal plan, you may donate up to 6 of your regular meal swipes.

Please consider donating to SwipeShare before the end of the semester on May 24, 2023, if you are able to. Donation acceptance will resume in the fall.
