Encouraging students to focus on their physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing within the academic space highlights the interconnectedness of their wellbeing and success. PIES is an acronym for how one might be feeling Physically, Intellectually, Emotionally, and Spiritually. During the beginning of each class the instructors can ask students to do a self-check on the components of PIES and share if comfortable. By going first, instructors can model how the check in should go. For example: “Today, I am feeling tired because I didn’t sleep very well” or “I’m feeling excited for the weekend because I am going to visit my best friend.” This is best used for smaller classes, though larger classes can do it as a slido to get a feeling for where everyone is.
